If you could accomplish all that while keeping your opponent in check quietly, you might not get talked about on the front page of the news, but you’d done your job quietly and well enough for people to want you to play more. But, overall, the spirit of that adage was true for defensemen: Don’t get burned, don’t make the big mistake and don’t take the big penalty. The game was gratuitously more forgiving of full-nelson maneuvers to drag down talented forwards with full heads of steam. That was mostly true for that era of hockey.
